A Southerner Against Jim Crow

Robert E. Lee's Daughter Arrested for solidarity with African Americans
. She sat in a train car reserved for Blacks and refused to move. From the Cleveland Gazette, June 21, 1902...

Points to remember:

  • She was the daughter of Robert E. Lee
  • This was consistent with the values of her father
  • The quote "assinine prejudice of 'chivalrous Southerners'"; uhh... she was Southern and she did something pretty chivalrous, disproving the implied stereotype.
  • Oh yeah... did I mention she was the daughter of Robert E. Lee?
